Yantras
| |

In my meditation practice over the years, shares Leslie Temple-Thurston, Ive
had some of the most profound spiritual openings with the practice of gazing
at yantras. That led me to want to share the technique with as many people
as possible. The yantra is an ancient, sacred meditation tool, which
provides a highly effective way to quiet the mind. The visual equivalent of
a mantra, yantras represent specific qualities of consciousness, and assist
you in shifting awareness into higher, more balanced states.
We offer 18 different, beautifully rendered yantras by artist James Emery
(8½ x 11", $7 each) and one by Leslie, entitled The Christ
Yantra/The Lotus and the Rose (11 x 14" poster with flat and metallic
inks, $17). You can see and read about all 19 here. A plexiglass boxframe
is also available (8½ x 11", $5).
About Yantras and Gazing:
To use a yantra it is best to be in a comfortable meditative posture. As you
focus on the center point in the design, let your gaze diffuse to incorporate
your peripheral vision. Never use a hard stare. While gazing softly at the
center point, absorb the layers of concentric geometrical forms as you move
your gaze outward. Try to completely let go, dissolve yourself and merge your
whole being with the yantra. As you continue to do this, feel the design of
the yantra realigning and balancing your consciousness. It is a subtle, yet
profound experience. You can gaze as long as you like. Gazing at the beginning
of your meditations is especially helpful.
The individual designs of each yantra serve very specific purposes. The qualities of the saint or deity for which the yantra was designed are imbued in the yantra's pattern.
In The Art of Gazing — A Guided Meditation, Leslie offers instruction in the art of gazing, and guides you in a meditation accompanied by soothing, relaxing music. |
